A 1.0 Cartridge is a version of Star Fox 64 that has a certain patch assigned to the game. To achieve the highest possible scores, you'll need a 1.0 cartridge. The reason is that 1.0 carts have a score cap of 999 per a level, while 1.1 carts are limited to 511. 511 is achievable on multiple planets, but a 1.1 cart will not credit any hits after that point. Since HIT+64 can't manually track points beyond the cap, using a 1.0 cart is essential.
You can identify which version you have by checking the engraving on the back of the cartridge:
If you see a letter, it's a 1.1 cart and won't work for this purpose.
When searching for a specific version of a cartridge, such as a 1.0 cart, it's crucial to verify the details before making a purchase. Here's a guide to help you find and confirm that you're buying the correct version on eBay or other third party marketplaces.
Browse the pictures for a cartridge with only TWO DIGITS on the back, this is a 1.0 version ROM. Make sure there are NO letters on the back.
If you cannot see the engraving via the pictures, move on to another seller, OR contact the merchant and politely ask for them to take a picture of the back.
(Optional note: I would not tell the seller why you are wanting pictures of the engraving, as this might increase the price of the cartridge)
CHECK for "TESTED WORKING" in the title, and check all descriptions. When someone puts "TESTED WORKING", sometimes you can trust them enough to know that the cart is indeed functional.
Please check the description on eBay for the condition of the cart. If the condition is marked as good, or used, if the cartridge DOES NOT work when you receive it, you are entitled to a full refund via eBay policy (Unaware of other third party merchants, buy at your own risk).
You can look for a Japanese cart, as all Japanese carts are on 1.0, however there ARE different enemy spawns between NTSC and NTSC JP. JP carts can be played on NTSC consoles, but this requires physical modification or a third party adapter to bypass.
WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY OCCUR TO YOUR N64 BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY DEVICES.
Gamesharks can also sometimes bypass the region lock.
Please be aware of reprints! Some sellers will be shady and sell carts that are not the real product. Although they may work, these are REPRINT carts that is not stored on OEM Hardware. What this will mean is the person took a ROM version of Star Fox 64, and put it on a custom cartridge to play that ROM on N64 consoles.
Reprints have been known to possibly cause electrical damage in N64 Systems, so it's advised HEAVILY to stay away from reprints. There may be some indicators such as missing labels or official seals on the cartridge.
